Book three of the Merimnae Saga

Disconnected from Sol, the Four Elders find themselves on a distant planet, drastically deviated from their original mission and playing grandparents to a burgeoning colony. Now they have to refocus their efforts on their core tasks, build a community and ensure the future, all while they continue to age.

Some of them will succeed, others will thrive, but some will fall, bringing heartache into the settlement. Who will take over when the time comes, and how will the human race succeed here on Physeter, if at all?

This third installment of the Merimnae saga tackles the final leap of the original four astronauts, their successes and failures, and the people they charge to carry on their torch.

The forty year mission to another star to find a new planet where humans can live is very believable. Four crew take turns being awake. There is emptiness and loneliness, but also camaraderie and love. It has wonderful discussions about genetic memories and the human-bacteria symbiosis.

If you like Verne, you like Altmann.
